GPO Telephone problem?

Hi there. I have just repaired an old 1960's GPO telephone and converted it. and no matter what I try to do with it just will not work propley. I plug the phone in to the telephone socket and I pick up the receiver and I get a dial tone for 2 minutes but then goes dead. I've also tried ringing up the phone and its always engaged I have checked the switch and it works I also tested the bell ringer and that works and I have cleaned up the dialer and oiled it. And I have cleaned every thing inside the phone with switch cleaner. And still have the same problem. I know that it is not the wiring as I have repaired another telephone the same model and is wired the same way and that one works with no problems. Can anyone help me with this.
Thanks...
Kevin

Answer:

It probably has a "loop" on it if you ring it when it is plugged & the line is engaged. A loop is technically a short circuit. It is probably not a full loop as you can draw dial tone of it. As to fixing it you will need to check the phone out with a meter. The chances are although you have cleaned it you may have a faulty component like a capacitor or something like that. The other question you should ask is the phone set up as a slave or a master. A master phone have components it them to allow it to ring. These days these components are fitted to the socket. These components should be bypassed if possible. This is probably not much help as I can not see the phone or look at it.

This link shows a diagram of a ringing circuit that may be in your phone. Try & by pass these components if you can. There should be several different connections on the inside of the phone allowing you to do this.

These links may be helpful as well.

You may have already done all this but if you have not check it out.
